Vikram Sarabhai: Pioneer of India's Space Odyssey

Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai was one of the greatest scientists in India. He is widely regarded as the father of the Indian space program.

Vikram Sarabhai was born on August 12, 1919, in Ahmedabad in an affluent family of progressive industrialists.

He was instrumental in establishing the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad: after returning from Cambridge to an independent India in 1947

He was also Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission.

The establishment of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was one of his greatest achievements.

 Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha, widely regarded as the father of India's nuclear science program, supported Dr. Sarabhai in setting up the first rocket launching station in India.

Dr. Vikram Sarabhai further established the Community Science Centre under the aegis of the Nehru Foundation for Development, which was renamed Vikram A.

Dr. Vikram Sarabhai died on 30 December 1971 at Kovalam, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
